Sean O’Toole is a PhD candidate working on a qualitative research study looking at the intersection of literary fiction and art criticism. He is particularly interested in the way fiction often subsumes critical modes of address. His research in particular focuses on the literary corpus of Ivan Vladislavić, a Johannesburg writer whose work has consistently engaged visual art production and offers a substantial, considered and sustained body of writing about South African visual art. An arts journalist by profession, Sean has written widely on the subject of art, architecture and design for various newspapers and magazines. He is co-editor of Cityscapes, a magazine project of the African Centre for Cities, and a past editor of the quarterly print magazine Art South Africa (2004-10). He has published one book of fiction, The Marquis of Mooikloof and Other Stories (2006), which included a story, awarded the HSBC/SA Pen Award.
