Thesis Title: Constructing the Reader in South Africa

My work concerns a history of reading in South Africa. I am currently working on constructions of the reader within the text. How are readers portrayed in South African novels? Who reads and who doesn’t? What is reading supposed to be for? Does anyone read for fun, or is it a more earnest endeavor? I am also looking at the reader as depicted and understood by the apartheid-era censors. I hope that my work will contribute to this rich and growing field.
