TB Davie pre-lecture dinner
English Department colleagues were delighted to be among those invited by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, and Chair of the Academic Freedom Committee, Professor Elelwani Ramugondo, to the TB Davie pre-lecture dinner to welcome Professor Pumla Dineo Gqola. Currently Director of Research at the University of Fort Hare, Professor Gqola is an alumnus of our English Department. Professor Gqola's TB Davie lecture brilliantly reflected on the centrality of student movements and rigorous critique as primary to the pursuit of transformation and academic freedom. As a wink to her English Literature background, Professor Gqola reflected on the importance of literature to her development as a scholar and its enduring necessity in the Humanities.
