ELL4001H Research Essay/Project (Full Year)

A research paper of 15 000 words on an approved topic in the field of English Studies is required and must be submitted before 17 October of the current year of registration.

The Honours research project is undertaken on a topic of your choice (established in dialogue with the postgraduate convenors and potential supervisors) under individual supervision by a member of staff. Students will be allocated a supervisor based on the wide-ranging research interests of our staff:

South, West and East African literatures, history and critical thought; creative writing and texts in performance; 19th and 20th-century poetry; black feminisms; queer studies; Early Modern studies, Shakespeare and the global South; postcolonial studies; decolonial theory; small magazines and African print cultures; Francophone writing; life-writing and creative non-fiction; European literary and cultural theory; and the environmental humanities.

The research project counts 20% of the final Honours mark.

There are two important deadlines to note:

  1. Submission of final proposal (the Essay Topic Form can be found on the Honours Vula Site): one week after the mid-term break in April
  2. Submission of final research essay for assessment: end of October (date TBC)
