Dr Kate Highman

Kate received her PhD from the University of York, with a thesis on debates about plagiarism and cultural ownership in South African letters. Since then she has held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of the Western Cape and the University of Oxford, and has been a visiting fellow at the University of Minnesota.
She is working on two projects at the moment - the first, a collaborative projects on writers' organisations and free expression, focussing particularly on PEN (see www.writerandfreeexpression.com), and the second, an enquiry into the history an politics of 'English' as a university discipline in South Africa. Broadly, her research interests are in literary institutions, politics and pedagogy, and she particularly enjoys ferreting in archives.
