Rodney Stenning Edgecombe took his MA with distinction at Rhodes University, where he won the Royal Society of St George Prize for English and obtained all the credits of his first degree in the first class. He then obtained his PhD at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he won the Members' English Prize. He holds a Distinguished Teacher Award from UCT, and has published 11 books (the most recent being on Thomas Hood) and 370 articles on topics ranging from Shakespeare to nineteenth-century opera and ballet. He serves as an advisor to the Oxford English Dictionary.
